PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME TREATMENT

Pain deep in the buttock that may travel down the leg can make sitting, walking, driving, or exercising uncomfortable. At Bayview North Family Chiropractic, we take the time to understand what's contributing to your symptoms by assessing your hips, pelvis, lower back, and movement patterns. From there, we'll create a personalized treatment plan designed to improve mobility, reduce discomfort, and help you move more comfortably.
WHAT IS PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME?

The piriformis is a small muscle located deep in the buttock that helps stabilize and rotate the hip. When this muscle becomes tight or irritated, it can place pressure on the nearby sciatic nerve, leading to pain, tingling, or numbness that may travel into the buttock or leg. Piriformis Syndrome may develop following prolonged sitting, repetitive activities, muscle imbalances, or overuse.
COMMON SYMPTOMS WE SEE
-
Deep, aching pain in the buttock region
-
Pain that may travel down the back of the thigh or leg
-
Increased discomfort when sitting for long periods
-
Pain triggered by climbing stairs or getting out of a car
-
Noticeable tenderness when pressure is applied to the buttock muscle

WHY AN ASSESSMENT MATTERS

Pain that travels down the leg isn't always caused by Piriformis Syndrome. Similar symptoms may also be related to sciatica, disc injuries, or other conditions affecting the lower back or hips. A thorough assessment helps determine what's contributing to your symptoms so we can recommend the most appropriate treatment.
HOW WE TREAT PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME AT BAYVIEW NORTH FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC

Your care begins with a thorough assessment of your hips, pelvis, lower back, and movement patterns to better understand what's contributing to your symptoms. Based on your assessment findings, your treatment plan may include gentle chiropractic adjustments when clinically appropriate, targeted soft tissue therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, and movement retraining designed to reduce muscle tension, improve hip function, and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
