Why I Became a Chiropractor

It’s hard for me to believe, but I just celebrated my 23rd year in practice. That means that I have been getting adjusted for more than a quarter of a century. Many people ask me why I became a Chiropractor. I guess my story starts when I was a toddler and I suffered from chronic, recurrent ear infections. With each infection I was given another dose of antibiotics. Eventually surgery was performed and tubes were put into my ears. Because of the high doses of antibiotics, I developed problems with my teeth and all my front baby teeth had to be extracted. Even after the tubes were put in my ears, I still remember being sick a lot when I was a kid.

When I was 11 years old things got even more serious for me and I developed my first migraine. I remember suddenly noticing bright lights in my field of vision, nausea and severe pain in my head. I thought I was dying. Because migraines run in my family my mom recognized the symptoms right away and had all the “right” pills in the medicine cabinet. The migraines continued into University where I suffered from them almost weekly. In addition I developed severe allergies, and still got sick fairly frequently. I saw different doctors who either recommended pills or told me it was is my head.

Finally in my 4th year of University a friend introduced me to Chiropractic. The chiropractor did a thorough examination and took x-rays of my neck. She explained to me that I had lost my curve in my neck and I had subluxations (areas of nerve interference in my spine) that were causing my headaches and many the other health problems I was experiencing. She explained that it probably stemmed back to the fact that I had a traumatic birth (I was delivered by vacuum extraction) and it was probably why I had suffered from ear infections and other health problems as a kid.

Right after my first adjustment I felt different. After a couple of months my migraines disappeared. In addition, my allergies went away and I noticed that my immune system was stronger. To say I was “sold” on Chiropractic was an understatement. I knew that this was my calling. I applied to CMCC and was fortunate to be accepted. I knew that I wanted to help others live better fuller lives through natural, Chiropractic care.

Not only have I been in practice for 23 years, but I will be turning 50 this January. Once all my symptoms went away I continued to get adjusted every week to two weeks. To this day, I make sure I get adjusted at this frequency. Thanks to Chiropractic I have been able to optimize my potential. As a child and youth I could never participate in sports because of my migraines and other health issues. Thanks to Chiropractic I am able to play tennis weekly, go on ski trips with my family and challenge myself with my workouts almost daily. I recently went on a vacation with my husband where we went rock climbing in Yosemite, rode dune buggies in Pismo Beach and rode a motorcycle down the Pacific Coast Highway. I plan on getting adjusted for the rest of my life so I can be my best and get the most out of my life.

Most people don’t realize that Chiropractic care is about making sure your spine and nervous system is functioning optimally to improve your overall health and well-being. It’s not just about treating back and neck pain – I am living proof of that. It is never to early or too late to get adjusted. I wish I had been adjusted when I was just a baby. I recommend that everybody, no matter what age or stage in your life, has a chiropractic checkup and gets adjusted so they can live a long healthy life. If you or someone you know wants to live a better, healthier, fuller life then my advice is to see a wellness Chiropractor. It’s one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family.
