The Text Neck Epidemic

Text NeckSeptember is student month at Bayview North Family Chiropractic. That means that we offer all kids and students a complimentary spinal check-up. Many people wonder why kids would need to see a chiropractor. To me, this means that they don’t truly understand how chiropractic helps people. Chiropractors are the only doctors who specialize in the health of your spine.

Your spine is important because it houses your spinal cord. Your spinal cord is the connection between your brain and the nerves that control your body. Think of your nerves like the wires in your house connecting all the power outlets and lights to the fuse box. If there is a break in the wire – no power! The same thing can happen with our nerves, but usually it is more subtle.

Stress on our spines can cause bones in the spine (vertebrae) to shift and start to irritate the nerves. Chiropractors refer to these misalignments as subluxations. Chiropractic adjustments remove subluxations to improve the function of your nervous system.

Subluxations affect your health in many ways. We don’t always feel them when they first appear – in the same way we may not know we have a small cavity. However, if left unchecked, subluxations can cause a myriad of health problems. Because chiropractic adjustments remove nerve interference they have been to be effective for conditions like back pain, neck pain and headaches. What most people don’t realize is that studies have also found chiropractic adjustments to help with fertility, blood pressure, digestion, allergies, immune system function, ear infections and even colic. I have seen all these benefits in patients at my clinic.

This brings me back to the question of why children and students should see a chiropractor. More than ever, kids have a lot of stress on their spines. Kids sit for hours in front of their computers, tablets and phones. The act of just sitting has been shown to cause tremendous stress and strain on the spine, but looking down at a small screen is even worse. There is a new condition referred to as “text neck”.

Text neck is the term used to describe the injuries and pain sustained from looking down at wireless devices for too long. The symptoms associated with text neck are:

  • Chronic headaches
  • Upper back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Neck pain
  • Abnormal posture

Some studies suggest text neck may lead to the early onset of arthritis and the potential for decreased lung capacity. Of course, text neck does not occur only from texting. For years, we’ve all looked down to read. The problem with texting is that it adds one more activity that causes us to look down more than in the past. This is especially concerning because young, growing children could possibly cause permanent damage to their spines as they grow.

In addition to “text neck” kids walk with heavy backpacks and play sports that jar their spine.

Make sure your child or student has a spinal check-up to protect their spine and nervous system. Call today to schedule your complimentary Chiropractic checkup at Bayview North Family Chiropractic: 905-881-8733.
